TASK: Help maintain the park, reduce the soil in heaped up and overgrown garden beds, transplant liriope to other areas and remove weeds.
BACKGROUND: Tompkins Square Park came into being when Peter Stuyvesant's ancestors bequeathed the area to the city with the understanding that it would always be "public property." Throughout its history, the 10.5 acre park has served as the cultural center and community meeting house for residents of the Lower East Side. In addition to expansive lawn and garden areas, the park holds claim to the city's first dog run as well as the largest stand of American Elms in the Northeast.
