Background: Tompkins Square Park came into being when Peter Stuyvesant's ancestors bequeathed the area to the city with the understanding that it would always be "public property." Throughout its history, the 10.5 acre park has served the as cultural center and community meeting house for residents of the Lower East Side. In addition to expansive lawn and garden areas, the park holds claim to the city's first dog run as well as the largest stand of American Elms in the Northeast.
