Background: The International Rescue Committee responds to the world’s worst humanitarian crises and helps people to survive and rebuild their lives. Founded in 1933 at the request of Albert Einstein, the IRC offers lifesaving care and life-changing assistance to refugees forced to flee from war or disaster. The IRC New Roots urban agriculture program improves the lives of newly arrived refugees and New Yorkers. At IRC's two community gardens in the Bronx, refugees and their new neighbors grow healthy produce for their families, learn new life skills, and engage in activities that strengthens their multi-cultural community.
